Why, yes it can!
Seriously, some enterprising investigative reporter should look into this. Why hasn’t mulch been recalled? Who will save us from our flowerbeds? Do we have any alternative? But mulch prevents weeds! It’s worth any sacrifice!
And yes, we still have a 10x5x3 pile of mulch in our driveway that’s been there since May. (the web-based “mulch calculator” was hideously wrong in assessing our mulch needs) And no, that was NOT where the mulch fire started.
1 Don’t worry, I do have far more lascivious searches-I am not totaallly lame. No really.

A year or so ago, around 5 AM, my dad damn near set my parents’ house on fire. He was having a smoke at the side of the house- a habit he told my mother and I he was no longer doing (we didn’t believe him) and discarded the cigarette in the bushes. The still lit cigarette sent the mulch and a half dozen rose bushes up in flames. I tell you this because he maintained then (and to this day) that “someone” must’ve started the fire. Too bad he didn’t know mulch could spontaneously combust. At least that could’ve actually happened.

tonkelu-I must confess that our sitter at the time was a smoker so a part of me went, hmmmm, but the fire started in a place where she would not have gone (too visible to the boys around whom she took great steps not to smoke in front of)

Oh I don’t doubt it! I’ve purchased some very interesting items via the wacky-wide web! I think I laughed because you spun it with finesse… sort of that Fred & Ethel Mertz “why do we have so much mulch in our driveway” sort of finesse.. or am I dating myself here? ha ha
